Soaring above your clouds...

soaring above my clouds

My two selves were in debate this morning as to if I should write a blog today.  It's Thanksgiving here in America.  A day of abundance.  We eat a lot (understatement)...  We thank a lot...

With that said .. my other self won the debate..thus I am here writing..

When I first sat here I actually started to write a whole different blog.. About this day and giving thanks etc..etc..etc..

Then I got to thinking about EVERYTHING...everything I am thankful for...everything I have been through this last year good and bad..(and I am thankful for both..for one without the other would provide no lessons).

..And as I was thinking about EVERYTHING, my flight back from Chicago popped into my head.  Shortly after take off I peered out the window of the plane at what was one of the most beautiful sites I have ever seen.  The clouds the sky and the sun all seemed never ending.  They were actually a blanket of soft warm light.  I felt absolutely serene and protected.. As if they were my clouds and the universe had put them there just for me..

..and as I looked out over these clouds that I was soaring above I recognized the message.  These were indeed my clouds to soar above..and I was indeed soaring above them.

You see for years I have aimed high..but we are so often taught to aim high in comparison to what the rest of the world is doing.

Looking out over those clouds I understood that success in love, life and happiness (and I say happiness because being happy is one of the most important areas of success in my book) means soaring above your own clouds..accepting who you are and always striving to be the best that you can be..for yourself.  I am capable of everything that I want..and my clouds are completely tangible..  Knowing this..I am unconditionally thankful..

Thankful for my clouds.  Thankful that I know and have the strength to soar above whatever thoughts, situations, predicaments, boundaries and even happiness that I create for myself.

And that I am abundantly thankful for..

Soaring above our own clouds.. I "LIKE"

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!

The Windy City...

Milk and Honey.
Mulberry & Me
Event Studio
Mirai Sushi
Casa De Soul
Vosges Haut Chocolat
Aroma Workshop

This past weekend I had the privilege to witness the induction of Lorraine Hansberry along with five other classic American writers into the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame.  I will take a moment to acknowledge the other five who all are amazing.  Saul Bellow, Studs Turkel, Nelso Algren, Richard Wright and Gewndolyn Brooks.  What an amazing night!! Along with this amazing privilege came a wonderful jam packed 2 days in the Windy City! Which actually was not so windy when I was there ..yay!

In the little time that I had I was determined to see all that I could.. I had it all planned out.. I had two days during day light hours..and hour hour there.. stop through and get a feel.. well suffice to say it did not exactly work that way.

I literally only got as far as Wicker park.  A charming neighborhood filled with coffee shops, dress shops, restaurants and bakery's.  I had exactly 4 hours to spare in my day and those five hours flew by on a street called Division.

Ahh Division St.

After borrowing a car (thanks Anton)..heading down the "Express Way", Google map in hand, finding a parking spot and promptly checking and rechecking the posted signs (parking tickets are $60 bucks in LA, I wasn't taking a chance) I gathered myself and began to comb the streets armored in my Black Marc Jacobs coat and my trusty Jill Sander platform boots.  Once again armed only with my iPhone. (I had no intention in doing any type of work during my weekend stay)

1. Cafe Milk & Honey
An adorable coffee/sandwich shop.  Very cozy and quaint.  I felt like I had transported myself to a small town as soon as I walked through the door.   Everything looked super good.  They even had there own namesake blend of Intelligentsia coffee..I had a hot soy Chai..

2. Mulberry & Me
I walked in to this little boutique and thought I was in New York for about 20 seconds.  I was greeted with a great big "hello" by the owner Jana Zacek.

Something that I noticed with everywhere I went on Division.  The people that man the boutiques are the people that own them. This makes for amazing friendly honest service.

Zana and I chit chatted for about an hour.. as I tried on the perfect little BB Dakota black dress.  Which I bought..of course..

3. Event Studio
Super cute everything shop!!  Planning an event?  This is the place.

4. KIZ
Where do I begin.. I walk in..and am immediately greeted by two stunningly beautiful sisters and the cutest puppy on the planet.  These lovely ladies just recently opened this edgy boutique.  After trying on pretty much everything in the place..I settled on two tops, two bracelets and a ring..  yes I know..but the price points are amazing..everything ranges from $35-$250 bucks!!

After spending hours chatting with super nice boutique owners and trying and buying nearly everything I saw (yes I need help).  I was famished.  I crossed the street I noticed a sushi place!! Yay!! I was craving it so..

5. Mirai Sushi
All I can say is WOW!..Amazing!... A quick dinner of Shoshito peppers, Fried Tofu and two orders of Unagi..and I was off!!
Next Stop

6. Casa De Soul
Once again I was greeted by Kennedy Ashinze who opened this swanky little boutique 7 years ago.  Which by the way in Boutique years is a lifetime.  This place is filled with clothes, accessories and books an gadgets hand picked by Kennedy from all over the world.

And my Last stop was:

7. Alliance Bakery
I had to end the day on Division with something sweet.. And that is exactly what I did.. a Hazelnut cupcake and some french macaroons for the drive back t the hotel.. perfect!

...was spent in Lincoln park.  Now I actually had less than two hours to eat and explore before I had to be back at the hotel and dressed for the induction here is what I found:

1.Vosges Haut Chocolate
Ginger bread toffee, spiced hot chocolate, bacon chocolate bars and dark chocolate with salted caramel and peanut butter.  I highly recommend!!

2. Aroma Workshop
For as little as $18 bucks you can create your very own signature scent, name it and take it home!!  I was in heaven.  I had 20 minutes to spare..I had to work fast. Smelling...testing...running outside to clear my nostrils..smelling and testing again..I came up with my very own "Hansberry" blend. Sweet and it!

..And last but not least

Spanish Tapas.. Amazing food and the best French 75 (aside from Chateau Marmont) that I have ever had..Just thinking about it.. I am getting hungry!!

So there you have it.. with less that 8 hours total Taye hours spent.. I give you the places I love in Chi Town!!  Can't wait to go back!!

If it ain't broke you can still fix it..

8 years, almost twice a week, breakfast, lunch and probably one to many treats.

Okay I just had to do that..It's out of my system..

Moving on.

For those of us who within the last few weeks have driven past Mani's Bakery on Fairfax and were over come with a wave of sheer panic from the brown paper covered windows and closed doors..Never fear Mani's on Maple has arrived.  Just think of it as an amped up/ grown up version of Mani's Bakery.  Complete with a bar, dinner and the cool people. (The MySpace offices are across the street)

Back Story:
A week ago I was invited to taste the new Happy Hour menu. Ahhhh...I adore tastings!!!  Especially at places that I already love!!  Anyhow..

Shall I start with the Drinks?  Four words for you ..Bee's Knees and Padre's Margarita (okay the "and" makes it five but you get my point)..OH....MY....LORD!

Two of the most tasty and refreshing drinks I have ever had.  Organic, not too sweet, and super flavorful.

26 words:  Lamb Sliders..HOLY MOLY...Arugula Salad with Beef Tenderloin...YUMMY...Heirloom Tomato Bruschetta...just know that I am salivating with the memories as I write this..

Everything I had was amazing.  I would have tried the entire menu but I wanted to actually walk, not waddle out of there.

Now usually happy hour is super happy while you are there partaking in what is usually a mixture of cheap liquor and greasy food.  Cut to 2 hours later when your body is not so happy!!

Not at Mani's..

This is what makes Mani's on Maple so awesome..
2 happy hours
3-7pm and 9-11,
$6 dollar drinks
$6 dollar food

Did I mention really really good food?

So good that I have already been back for more, not as a blogger but as a full fledged citizen ;)

The Beauty Park....

Nurse Jamie at Beauty Park, Santa Monica, Ca

I was mid hemp milk latte when I started thinking.  Like really hard!  For some reason women were on my mind.  Women who had ideas, made sacrifices, and turned their dreams into reality.  By the time I finished my latte I started thinking about my friend Jamie Sherrill .  Known to most as Nurse Jamie from the Lifechangers segments on  Extra TV.

Less than two years after I met Nurse Jaime she went from working at a medispa to owning one.

Allow me to give you a little Nurse Jamie history..  She has a published book called The Botox Diaries.  She was the go to nurse at Kirsten Dunst's medispa, Belle Visage. Yes Kirsten Dunst has a medispa.  She has been making the folks of L.A. prettier for about 12 years (lets be real, there are some really pretty people out here) and on top of all that she's is just plain awesome..!!

Beauty Park is exactly what it's called.. a Beauty Park.  Located on Montana Ave in Santa Monica..this little place serves up everything from B-12 shots to Botox.

Instead of simply thinking of my friend I decided to pay her a little visit.  Now unlike Miss Kardashian, (we all remember that debacle) I am not quite ready for Botox.. But never fear... Nurse Jaime is a master at everything..

After catching up on each others lives..umm hello...girl talk is always the first order of business,  Jamie slathered my face with some clear cold lube, whipped out what looked like a vacuum cleaner hose with a blue light peering through and proceeded to vacuum/laser my entire face.  I later found out that this little laser thingy named an Alma Skin Tightening Laser is going to be my new BFF.  Within minutes my little chubby face totally looked slimmer, fresher and rested.

I'll give you a list of the services Beauty Park offers.

skin lasers
tattoo removal
laser hair removal
vitamin injections
stretch mark removal
acne treatments
cellulite reduction
weigh loss therapies
laser vein treatment
cortisone injections
B-12 injection

..and this is just hitting the surface..

Nurse Jamie has made her Beauty Park a one stop shop of pretty.

...And yes I have seen men in there too..  Ladies are not the only ones worried about their looks. :)

Anyhow back to my original thoughts.. entrepreneurship.. Nurse Jaime turned her dream of owning a spa into a reality in less than a year.  What exactly are the rest of us waiting for!!

LAMILL...A Coffee Boutique

Caramel Corn
Coffee and Jelly Doughnut
Creme Brulee
Blanco y Negro
Orange infused Cappuccino with cacao
Honk Kong Milk Tea

Intrigued yet?

I certainly was when I sat down at LAMILL,  Silverlake's own coffee shop/restaurant/gourmet tea house.

I happened upon LAMILL about two weeks ago when my cousin Fabienne and I were so rudely stood up for a early morning meeting..ugg those darn creative types!!  Lets turn that negative into a positive.  I am a firm believer in the phrase "everything happens for a reason".

This reason:  To get introduced to some of the best food, coffee and pastries in LA.

As I sat and ate my warm flaky buttery croissant,  drank my soy latte and took about five huge bites of Fabienne's blueberry muffin, I kept saying to myself.. "my lord I feel a blog coming on".  Now I am not at all claiming to know about everything in L.A.  However, I can't help but to think that if I didn't know about this place until that very morning two weeks ago, there has to be hundreds maybe thousands more just like me missing out!  They've been open since 2008 for goodness sake.  Ugg.. two years of good eating lost.

Here is a little quickie.. a sort of LAMILL Basics 101

We start with the "Coffee and Jelly Doughnut" espresso..  A whole lot of yummy in a little glass complete with miniature spoon.  Super cute.

Moving right along to the  "Not Quite French Toast"..  reminds me so very much of the cinnamon, sugar, butter sandwiches I would make myself as a kid.  Only better!  Please don't judge me for that.

Next, the "Vegan Eggplant Miso Sandwich".  Might be one of the best sandwiches I have ever tasted.  If you are not vegan you may just convert.. Wow!!

Okay then there is the "Dungeness Crab" Vegetarian Hen eggs.  Umm... Dungeness Crab... Need I say more?

These basis should give you a little hint on how NOT BASIC this little caffeine oasis it.. it's fabulous!

Did I also mention that the place is super cute.  I didn't want to leave!  Actually leaving would have been a bit of a challenge considering I wanted to stuff all the furniture in my purse and redecorate my entire house.

Oh and please allow me to correct my earlier statement ..LAMILL  is not a "coffee shop"..its a "coffee boutique" amazing one!

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner...
