Spider Lashes

my spider lashes

Quick beauty post..

I have been meaning to actually post this for a while.  As someone who does not wear lashes.. meaning the kind that come in the package with the little white glue.  Nor do I indulge in the semi permanent falsies that you can pretty much get in any nail shop.. I have become super obsessed with Spider Lashes..

All it requires is a tube of mascara.. the lashes you were born with... a steady hand and a bit of patience..

So here's the deal..  Pile on..coat after coat after coat after coat (pause for breath)....and then when you think you are done, pile on three more coats!

I also got a great tip from celebrity make up artists Amy Nadine of  when she did my make up at the Cover Girl/MTV beauty event.  She said for serious spider lashes, powder your lashes in between coats..  Thanks Amy!

Note:  please stop yourself just short of the late Tammy Faye Bakker..

Here is a great video courtesy of  Pat McGrath demonstrates..  Awesome!!

Pile away ladies..and gents if you  feel so inclined!

Another Amazing Event...Armed with only my iPhone

Quick post.. Last week I was super excited to be invited to the Restoration Hardware Gallery opening in association with LACMA.

Rather than me attempt to remember or write everyone involved I'll just post the invite here That way you can get the gist..

 Okay got it?

After valeting my extremely dirty vehicle (embarrassing) and fighting my way through the 35 or so protesters on the picket line yelling obscenities..yes I just said protesters on the picket line..(I actually forgot where I was for about 10 seconds).. I entered one of the most beautifully lit tree covered patios (at least I think that's what it was) that I have ever seen and promptly made my way to the bar.

Not only were the drinks overflowing..Fresh Peach Bellini's served by Luca Rastelli of Cipriani NY (light on the alcohol just the way I like it)..sooooo good and hors d’oeuvres by Tyler Florence, Ah-mazing.  The gallery is unbelievably inspiring.  Every corner I turned I kept saying "I need my house to look like this"!

Now you might be wondering why I did not take my Nikon to this event.. Here's the deal..we were specifically told that we could not bring our cameras because they had event photogs there already to go.

Hello iPhone.. Now I had to be super incognito and most of the shots were taken whilst I would gently glide by the subject.. peach bellini and Rebbecca Minkoff in one hand and iPhone in the other.  It was actually quite fun.  Once in a while I would get caught and evil eyed by security..nothing a little wink and sweet hello couldn't handle.

Anyhow.. If you can get by there I highly recommend going..taking a stroll..imagining how amazing life would be with every piece in your house....well maybe that's just me..but trust me you will be wowed!

BTW  Mr. Jae Joseph and Mr. Patrick Buchanan were my partners in crime..

Mr. Nars

Me and The Amazing Uzo

I have to say that I am so very excited to write this post..  As you all know I adore make up.. I have obscene amounts of it..  people often think I am a make up artist when they see my stash.

Anyhow..this past Saturday I got to meet a man that I have adored from a far for at least 9 years.   Mr. Francois Nars.

The make up genius..king..master..ruler..champion..

THE Mother F*ing MAN!!

Can you tell I "LIKE" him..

I along with a bazillion others stood in a line and had my book signed..(this is the book I bought in 2003 BTW..I know this because it was signed by this top assistant back then)..

The place was a beautiful madhouse of make up..make up artist and ladies getting beautified.  All directed by my friend, make up artist extraordinaire UZO..who happens to be the national make up artist for NARS.

If you are not familiar with Nars make't walk..  it will change your life!

Have a happy week everyone..

Wench + Denim + Tie Die...

Today's Look
Denim Jacket: The Gap 1969
Shoes: Micheal Kors
Nails: OPI..Lava Lamp
Bag: Nanette Lepore

This was definitely one of those days were I never expected to shoot a FASHION FRIDAY..  But the end of the day arrived and I said why the hec not!!  And if you are going to shoot a FASHION FRIDAY..last minute..with literally no light  why not do it next to a Lady Gaga Poster!

That would be Gaga's eye in the first photo..

The Skirt:
I've had it for about two years.. they still sell it.. check the link above.  That's one of the many great things about American Apparel.  They keep the same styles forever.. It's actually very refreshing..

The Shoes:
These are pretty much my daily go-to's  while I am still recovering from surgery.  Nothing like a good platform to fool people into thinking you are tall.

The Denim Jacket:
One of three I own..they never go out of style for me..I don't care what the IN/OUT section of Harper's Bazaar says!!

I am currently finishing up this book Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez.. If you ever have the urge to read a fiction not so fiction book about 4 slave women in the American South and their totally abusive masters/lovers/brothers/baby daddies...grab it!  Pretty raw.. pretty gut wrenching!

My birthday week was fantastic by the many amazing notes and birthday wishes left everywhere..facebook, text voicemail, in person! I felt really really really loved!

I scooped up a couple pair of new shoes..can't wait to test them out here.  I love this about my birthday.. it falls right on the summer sales. Perfect timing!

Have a groovy weekend everyone!!

Hahahaha! I start this here birthday post with a quick chuckle..  I know that some of you ..especially you Mr. Courtney K.  are saying "Well Taye has finally lost it" .  I promise I did not "just" lose was lost along time ago.. and the more years I pack on the more I understand how important that is..

Okay let me actually explain myself..

I'm referring to the ability to not take everything so very seriously..especially one's self.

When I was a kid I was what people like to call a cry baby.. a whiny child.. but to be perfectly honest I was just mostly a pouter.  I would pout when I did not get my way.. and my Grandma would actually laugh.. she never took me so seriously when I would pout because she knew I was just being a kid..and it's really simple..

That's just their little natures.  For the most part kids have no inhibitions until we as adults pile the these thoughts and ideas of..

hesitations, restriction, restraint, constraint, barriers, wariness, self-consciousness.. the beginning kids are able to brush them off.. at first all at once..then only one by one.. until the little person is eventually unable to shake them.

Pretty much causing insecurity and reservation..

I say all this to refer back to the photo's I chose for this birthday post..  At that moment I did not feel like shooting..I was tired and felt super I expressed it..and in return I got three photo's that I absolutely adore!!

Last years birthday post was all about Optimism and Love.. this year it's all about not holding back and letting it all out..

your potential..your creativity..your ambition..your Gusto!!

So long as you don't hurt others in the process..go for what you want!!  And that's what my year from today June 21, 2011 until June 21, 2012 will be all about!!  Me!!!.. It may sound selfish..but when you express all of you ..the world will definitely be a better place for everyone...

With that said.. I will go through this day..with everything I have to express.. and enjoy everything that comes my way..

Happy Birthday to me :D

Prophets and Assassins

Wednesday night armed with a borrowed camera (the Nikon has a bit of a cold) and a nasty case of strep throat I mustered up the strength to attend an amazing exhibition at the B.O.A gallery on Melrose.

I honestly was not sure what to expect..  Just the name alone provokes thought..
Curated by Jae Joseph of Freide + Co.. his pretty stellar lifestyle branding firm and held at the newly birthed B.O.A. Gallery space on Melrose..that's the Melrose west of Fairfax!

Prophets and Assassins is the brain child and a product of serious collaboration between Bob Ore and artist Christopher Butler.

The larger than life paintings pop off the walls with a very cinematic glow..  and the array of modern day as well as biblical prophets is astounding.

Here is a quick run down of the exhibition.

Side by side are huge glossy colorful full of light and life painting of both the "Prophets" and the Assassin of that Prophets.

for example

John Lenon. Assassin Mark David Chapman • Marlyn Monroe. Assassin Valium •  Martin Luther King. Assassin James Earl Ray •  Harvey Milk. Assassin Dan White • Anwar Sadat. Assassin Khalid Islambouli • James Dean. Assassin Porsche 130 • Anne Frank.Assaasin Anti -Semite. Socrates. Assassin Athens

Not only are the paintings brain stirring and alive.. but Freide+Co knows how to open an exhibition.  The champagne flowed and drinks were generously  poured  by the handsome models of Runway Waiters... and it may have been some of the best cured meat and cheese I have ever had.  Even sick I could not stop finding my way to the hors d'oeuvres table.

The exhibition will be up until July 15..  I recommend stopping in to take a look.

Heart Stamped Memories..Daddy's day ♥

I thought I would share a couple photo's of the man that I always tweet about on this fathers day.  This is my dad, Leroy.  You may recognize his name from the tattoo on my right foot.. I don't have many photo's of him.. I guess back then they were not as picture obsessed as we are or it could be that the  people that have photos of him would like to keep them for themselves.. very understandable ..he was very loved.  ♥

He was killed by a drunk driver when I was just three years old, he was 24.  Although I don't remember him I feel his presence with me all the time.  Particularly in this last year..  I feel like events in my life have lead his spirit to protect me.  Which I fully appreciate!

The top photo is my favorite photo.  I don't think I was around yet..but my mom and my dad look so cool!!!  She beautiful and him strong and handsome..  You can tell that they were very much in love.. fully part of each others world..protective of each other..

This photo of me is the only very vague memory I think I have of him.. but it is entirely possible that I have completely created the memory in my heart.  I remember sitting in his navy blue convertible Triumph and going really fast on the highway.  The sun out and all was beautiful..Does sound like a dream right..I will just continue to believe it is a memory... real and true..  It makes me smile..

Whether you are spending the day with your father, blood or not..cherish him.. Let him know that you love him!!

Happy Fathers Day to all the wonderful Dad's of the world...

Fashion Friday..It's all in the name of fashion

 Today's Look

Belt: Vintage
Necklace: House of Harlow
Watch: Micheal Kors
Pyramid bracelet: Marc by Marc
Ring: Club Monaco
Earrings: Forever 21
Blazer: H&M
Nails: Sally Hansen Salon Effects
Wedges: Sam Edleman

I am sitting here with a nasty case of strep throat pondering what exactly to write on this here FASHION FRIDAY.. I have managed to muster up about one ounce of energy to get to this computer and say a few words..believe me I seriously contemplated an absence of FASHION FRIDAY this week..I thought maybe they wont notice?

But the guilt was haunting me.. so here I am..  These pic's were actually taken a while back..  they were sitting in the archives and I adore this H&M jumper so much I thought why not. I actually went through hoops to get it..

Here's the story.. many months ago I saw this lovely vintage inspired jumper at H&M on Sunset..but they only had a size 10.  Hmm!  Believe me when I say I still I put it on, belted it, pinned it, absolutely tried to make it work, but it didn't.  They also had a black one in a size 4.. which fit perfectly..ugh!  So of course I bought that one.  But I just was not satisfied..I REALLY wanted the white one.  Ladies you know the feeling I'm taking about.

Thus the quest began.

I literally called or visited every H&M in the greater Los Angeles area.. NOTHING...   Mind you I was doing all of this on crutches :)

Now this just so happened to be the week that Courtney K moved to New York..(light bulb) and knowing that it was still freezing in NYC I figured that the white jumper had to be somewhere in that city..  I mean who really buys their clothes a season ahead these days!

So I pulled out the old trusty iPhone..went straight to maps..typed in "H&M New York" and got to calling every store in Manhattan.  Five locations, and some really nice sale associates later I found it..

A white jumper size 4..YES!!!

So you can only guess who I called to go grab it right!!  You got it.. This is the sign of a true bestie.. Someone who will drudge through the cold rain in a city they have not even lived in for a week to buy a jumper for a girl 2000 miles away!!  Needless to say the purchase was made..the funds were exchanged and the box arrived 5 days later!! Whoo Hoo!!!

And that's pretty much all I have to say ;)

Wait I lied..

Have a very special weekend everybody!!
