This FASHION FRIDAY sort of became a combination of Taye shoots the Flat Iron Truck and Numa  shoots Taye...

Being that it was a few weeks in the works, when the day came and I had accidentally double booked I said hey.. why not kill two birds with one stone.

So that is exactly what we did..and I have to say.. I am supremely happy with what came about.  Yummy food + Yummy Photos.

Okay a quick brief on the outfit.

I completely had a totally different amazing color blocked bright shiny outfit planned ..And realized as I went to put it on, that the upper half of my fabulous outfit was still at Neiman Marcus due to the fact that I bought it on a last call pre-sale  a couple weeks ago and totally forgot to pick it up...  Thinking this whole time that it was in my closet.. Please don't judge me..

Thus,  the last minute Overalls/ Tank/ Wang/ Minkoff mash up.

I call it the comfy comb..

On another note..I am headed back to the Flat Iron Truck this weekend to get a couple more snaps..Blog so soon to come...

Oh yeah one more many of you have asked what I shoot with..  well there she is..fourth photo down.  My Baby..My Love..The Nikon!

Eat Real..

This is a terribly late post...but I had to post it..

I sure many of you in LA went because it was packed!!  But if you did not get the chance to go the the Eat Real Festival at the Helms Bakery in Culver City a couple weekends ago or you were like the several friends of mine who said "I drove by..looked cool" you can see what you missed and what you can expect next year right here.

Let me tell you it was awesome..

So much great locally grown, locally made food and to die for deserts that I just could not stop eating...ALL DAY!

Being from L.A. I have never really known what it's like to be in a real live home grown small town..but I imagine that the Eat Real Festival came really close. Just people, young and old, single and with families enjoying a harmless day out in the sun drinking beer out of mason jars and scarfing down hot dogs and bacon mac and cheese while polishing it all off with a hand made, home made ice cream sandwich!!

Okay maybe that's not what a "small town" is like..but don't wreck my fantasy okay...

Quick Beauty Post: That Beyonce Glow..

St. Tropez (left to right) Every Day Perfect Legs, Self tan Bronzing Mousse, Self Tan Bronzing Spray, Bronzing Rocks,Wash off Instant Glow body Lotion, ,Gold Skin Illuminator, Wash off Shimmer Stick

Fake Bake (left to right) Flawless Self tan liquid, Tan Enhancing Lotion,The Face Anti aging lotion, Shimmer instant wash off lotion, Bronze Babe lip gloss.

So I don't usually do comparisons here on Stuff She Likes.. I think I have actually only done one and it was over a year HERE if you missed it .. comparisons are more like I love them both here is the difference..  I like to think that is a bit more positive than saying this one sucks and this one doesn't..  Thus I compare products I "Like"

Which brings me to the post at hand..

I don't know if I have ever really stated this..but I was not blessed with golden tan skin.. yes I am a woman of color and yes I tan very well once I have submitted myself to the torture of laying and sweating for hours in the sun.... And yes I am one of those girls who used to bake in the sun with nothing other than carrot oil as protection..

My face will most likely be very angry with me later in life for future plastic surgeon will most likely be very thankful ;)

Okay I keep getting off subject darnit...

What was I saying?...oh yes the post at hand..

I have been using them for a few years now.. if it tans..I have tried it..  And this summer I have been blessed to be introduced to two companies that not only tan beautifully..but also pretty much rock my world.

St. Tropez and Fake Bake..

It's taken me a couple months to properly test both are my findings..

• The tan I get from St. Tropez is a golden dark brown tan, whereas the tan from Fake Bake is more of a light golden.

• Fake Bake is more about sparkle where St. Tropez is very centered around luminance and glow  ..I adore both!!

• St. Tropez smells like coconut, where Fake bake smells like sweet champagne (strange comparison I know's just my take people).

• I used the St. Tropez Bronzing mousse on my face, where Fake Bake has a bronze specifically for the face.. I dig that..

•Although I like the smell of St. Tropez a bit better,  Fake Bake is organic..which is great!

•They both have a line of instant wash off products..great for when you just want to darken for the night.

They both come with special applicator mitts..A must to apply right with no streaks.. no other product I have used comes with these mitts and sometimes my tan is a bit streaky..

The main point is that neither product turned me the dreaded orange.. which I have noticed with prolonged use of other self tan products.  Neither started cracking or streaking in the individual months that I tried out both products.

The St. Tropez Bronzing Rocks, Wash Off Shimmer Stick and Golden Skin Illuminator all rock my world!!  They give a nice subtle highlight to the skin.

And the Fake Bake Tan Enhancing Lotion is Amaze!  The golden sparkles reflect in the sun and give a creamy look to your skin that is awesome.

Basically its all a matter of taste between the two..They give different results both equally lovely.

...And they both have great super informative websites that you can see here:

It's all about the Beyonce Glow.. you didn't think that was her natural skin did you?

Self Tans that don't leave you orange.. I "Like"

McQueen + The MET + Me (looking like a real live Tourist)

The beginning of the McQueen exhibit.
Me waiting for the train with my tourist paraphernalia

I want to be honest about the world that we live in and sometimes my political persuasions come through in my work.  Fashion can be really racist, looking at the clothes of other cultures at costumes...That's mundane and it's old hat. Let's Breakdown some barriers.

-Alexander McQueen

This is a quick post to literally say that if you are in at all into fashion and art AND in New York City AND have not been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty exhibit then you are truly missing out.

In my day and half trip I somehow managed to get there..and it was more than worth it.  Now the sad part is that there is no photography allowed so I was only able to get one semi-recognizable photo.  Actually amazing that I got one at all being that I was shooting blind from my cell phone into a mirror that serves as the base for the beginning portion of the exhibit.

Thus one photo.. and not from lack of trying, but after my third warning from the very serious security guard I figured it was more important to actually see the exhibit.

Now yes the rumors are true.  There is a two hour wait.. However..when your back is against the wall and you only have an hour to spare.. the universe will step in on your behalf.. which is exactly what happened to me.

Hear this..

Members of the MET skip the line..

I am not a member, but happened to be standing in line in front of an amazing mother daughter pair that decide to purchase the $70 dollar membership right there on the spot.. so I did what any desperate girl boarding a plane to Chicago in 4 hours would do..I offered them $10 bucks to walk in with them..  and guess what...  I skipped the line.. I have to say that they actually would not take the $10 bucks from me, which made it even more amazing.. I thank them completely.

The exhibit closes August 7th.. so seriously get over there...

New York Diaries: the sweets edition

So in a day and a half of walking the streets of New York in the sweltering heat..seeking shelter in an air conditioned dwelling usually consisted of a places full of food..actually for the most part ice cream.

There is just so much of it readily available.. I mean if you are  doing all that's okay to have ice cream two three times a day right?  I mean how else does one cool down?

Let me give you a little run down of these places..just in case you  are in NYC and need to seek shelter from the sweltering heat.

First let me be entirely was not all ice cream...there may have been a trip to Clinton Hill Brooklyn for a specific doughnut shop thrown in the mix... and maybe, just maybe a trip to the East Village for a cookie.

Anyhow.  The Rundown.

1. The Van Leeuwen Ice Cream truck
All I can say is that I had a scoop of Cinnamon and a scoop of Mint Chip..Perfection!

New York Diaries

Ahh New York.. What a place.  What a city.  Such energy.  Such life!
Can you tell that it's one of my favorite cities..

My last minute impromptu trip to New York last week was literally two days.  Well really a day and a lunch if you count the time I had to roam free.  In that time I managed to walk the city, ride the train, miss my stop and end up in Brooklyn, yell at a cab driver, eat tons of ice cream,  see the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the MET, visit Mr. Courtney K. at his new NYC dwellings, hang with one of my best girls and her impossibly cute 1 1/2  year old daughter and shoot as many photos as I possibly could before melting.

Great Times!

It was hot!  Really hot.. so here is a glimpse into what some New Yorkers are wearing as they manage the heat..and make it through the day.

The place

Three guys that went to school together ..had a passion for food and made it happen..Gotta love it when a plan comes together.

Hello  Mezze...

My love affair started with Mezza about two months ago.  I was at the B.O.A. Gallery opening on Melrose when somewhere between my temporary tattoo, my glass of white wine and my hand full of cheese I was invited to eat at a brand new restaurant on La Cienega called Mezze.  So I gathered three friends and headed over.

At first bite I knew that at some point a blog post would have to follow.

If you go to Mezze's website..the description reads.. "Contemporary Mediterranean Cuisine"...I call it perfection..
...and since I have been back a couple times I've tried several items on the perfectly sized menu.  Just enough choices to keep you satisfied but not overwhelm you..Not to much ..not to little..

Now I know the photo's above pretty much say it all..I am getting hungry looking at them now..but allow me to run down a list of the super tasty dishes I've had..

Beet Salad..Chickpea, Sheep's Milk Yogurt, Haloumi
White Trout..with Heirloom Cucumber and Smoked egg
Farm Chicken salad
Blue Prawn with Black and White Fennel, Nigella
Hanger Steak with Charmoula, Apricot, Okra
Hashweh Risotto, Summer Truffle, Lamb, Fried Lemon
Warm Pita with Honey Butter
Merguez Sausage flat bread with Tomato jam and Aleppo Pepper
Plum Mille-Feuille with Pistachio, Honey, Oats, Plum sorbet
Chocolate Hazelnut Meringue Cake w/Baharat chocolate ice cream

•A little garden behind the restaurant..from which the chef pulls many of the ingredients that end up on your plate..  Super cool..

•Full bar complete with a cocktail menu, Middle Eastern wines and coffee and for those of you that don't drink, non alcoholic yumminess.
•Friday and Saturday late night menu that starts at 11pm and goes until 1am ...and it's a pretty great late night menu..with everything from flat breads to desserts.

Mezze is open 6 days a week for dinner and Tuesdays-Fridays for lunch.. and if you are at all into bar codes.. bring your App..cause pretty soon there will be one on every menu with a little surprise..

FASHION FRIDAY .. Stuff She Likes ♥'s Emma Benson..

Taken From FASHION FRIDAY The Summer Series
TAken from FASHION FRIDAY. A Little Nude in the California Rain

Taken from FASHION FRIDAY. Bare Nails and Baggy Jeans

So In lieu of our regular FASHION FRIDAY programing...  I am doing a little Stuff She Likes special..

Back story..

I was sitting in one of my favorite little French Cafes on Melrose.  Froma on Melrose, sipping my latte and eatting my egg/basil breakfast sandwich at 2 in the afternoon, when I heard the voice of a child that had the gusto, maturity and courage of a 25 year old.

11 year old ARTIST.. Emma Benson the day I met her..
This big voice was coming from Little Emma Benson..  My first question was something to the effect of..

"Adore your hat..where did you get it?"  To which she replied "'s my dolls."

My second question was..

"Are you an actress?" which she replied.."No I'm an artist!"

..At that moment I knew this little girl was brilliant!

How could I not have a conversation with this gem. 11 years old and more conviction that most adults.

So after a long discussion with Emma and her mother Molly,  who is also a gem BTW..  we talked about art, fashion, her drawings..

We exchanged info..

and a couple weeks later I got an email..Emma's interpretations of me and my FASHION FRIDAYS.. And I ADORE them.  For an 11 year old to have such talent and execute her own ideas so very in my opinion ..incredible!

Mark my words Young Emma is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

She even has her own Cafe Press page called Emma Art where she sells her art on bags, tee's, cards and sweatshirts..  I don't know about you ..but at eleven.. I was playing with my barbies..and occasionally selling lemonade in front of my doorstep.. for 50 cents.

Thanks Rock!

Sante D'Or Animal rescue

So it has definitely been over a month since the last Doggy Days posting...I can only ask for forgiveness from the little guys who may have already been adopted had I posted this in a timely fashion.

But before we get to that.. you may be wondering why I have neglected to post anything since last Friday...for lack of better words...I had a whirlwind last four days.. Saturday night I attended the Black Weblog which I did not win..but thank you so much to all who took the time to vote for me.  Then headed home to pack for an 8am flight to NYC followed a day and a half later by a flight to Chicago followed the next day with a flight back home.  Full blog post to come next week.

Alrighty..  back to the little guys.

Meet the pups, kittens and rabbits of Sante D'or Foundation.. now I know the post is called DOGGY DAYS.. but I will not leave a Kitty nor a Rabbit behind simply because of a title...Along with writing this post in about 10 minutes.. I had to shoot these little guys literally in 5 minutes. I am DEATHLY allergic to cats..  and the room was full of them..all wanting to play..

Anyhow is the website for more info on any of the animals you see above..

Shoes: Courtesy of Report Signature
Bag: Vintage
Watch: Gucci
Buckle bracelet: Marc by Marc
Key Necklace: Marc by Marc
Sunnies: Raen Optics
Bra: Cosabella

I must say that so far shooting the FASHION FRIDAY Summer Series has been the time of my life.. really digging the chance to work with these different fellow photogs..

This shoot actually took 20 minutes :)  Super fun Super laid back..

This week in wardrobeland I was really going for a simple ..not too much on it kind of L.A. vibe with everything I wore.. so I thought I would bring that to this weeks FASHION FRIDAY..

The Division E Dress:
This super soft effortless dress is quintessential L.A.  Throw it  on.. no fuss..  This will definitely be a staple in my closet for the summer.. Slap on a pair of summer platform heels and it's pretty much day to night.

The White Blazer:
By now we all know that I think that a good blazer pulls any good outfit together :) And this one is proof that you don't have to spend a crazy amount of money for a good one.  I got this one for $60 bucks.  It's stark white perfection.  I like that it's boxy with pockets big enough for anything.. I've been wearing it for a couple years now and I never tire of it.

The Report Signature Shoes:
How freaking cute.. I feel like when I put them on I should totally throw up my jazz hands..

The Vintage Bag:
Super know..the kind with no label and strange lining..I got it for like $10 bucks years and years ago and definitely feel like it spent some time at Studio 54 in the 80's...The big silver buckle on it ROCKS MY WORLD..

The Raen Sunnies:
Raen is a new company based out of San Diego.  Got them at a beauty day a few weeks back..have not taken them off yet!

Well.. Have a great weekend everyone.. I truly hope your week was stupendous...yes big words folks.. big words!
