Night Cap

A long long time ago in a blog post far far away I mentioned Collagen Powder... Since then the Stuff She Likes inbox has had several requests for a Collagen Powder post..  So I thought ..Why not now..

It's a mini review of the supplements that I take at night right before I go to bed.

It's my night cap.

I'd  like to think   no...I firmly believe that my mostly clear skin (despite the fact that I love sweets), health hair (I do a lot of mean stuff to it) and healthy nails have a little something to do with the stuff in the photo above.  I proclaim this very strong statement because whenever I slack off and forget my "Night Cap" for a little while,  I start to see the difference.  Not so clear skin, dry hair, splitting peeling nails.  Doesn't take a scientist!

Okay a quick run down:

Chromium
I have a significant amount of diabetics in my immediate family.  Thus my Chromium intake began after I did a blood sugar test that for me was waaaayyyy to close to the edge of being diabetic.  I am not diabetic..but I am a steady believer in preventive actions.  Don't wait until it happens to address the issue.

Super Collagen
Beneficial in so many ways.  It thickens your hair, corrects week brittle nails, helps to build lean muscle mass and repairs the connective tissues throughout your body.  You know that stuff women are always getting injected into their face.. I drink it!  Collagen helps keep it all tight!  Warning..It smells like death and tastes even worse.  My advice...Plug your nose and guzzle.

Vitamin K
I bruise easily.. REALLY EASILY!!  Actually easily is not the word.  If I bump into anything I get a massive black, blue & purple bruise on that very spot (arms, legs, head) and I am a bit of a klutz so I'm ALWAYS bruised.  Vitamin K has changed that for the better by about 75 percent for me.  Here's nice little side effect.. the dark circles under my eyes are significantly lessened when I take it.

Biotin
Acne, brittle nails, diabetes, eczema and hair loss...need I say more ;)

Well there you have it.  I am no expert..But I do know what works for me and I am discovering new goodies all the time. So from time to time I will post what I do or what I have learned.

Growing up my mom always taught me that how I treat the inside of my body directly effects the outside.

Beauty is literally from within...

You can find all these supplements at Whole Foods and nothing is over $20 bucks. Yay!

Getting it in from within.. I "Like"

FASHION FRIDAY..It's a Little Nasty..GAL

FASHION FRIDAY

Today's Look
Crochet Kimono Dress: Nasty Gal
Nude Tube Dress: American Apparel
Bag: Not Rational
Heart Bracelets: H&M
Boots, Best, Necklace, Earrings: Vintage
Kakhi,Gold and Silver mix Bracelet: Dolce Vita Boutique
Sunnies: Somewhere near the ally downtown

FASHION FRIDAY

Ahh another dress that I have been DYYYYYING to wear.. I relish in  the idea that it looks like a doily which reminds me of my grandma..but is just see through enough to make it sexy..

This was one of those vintage days for me..I have them once in a while where I just pull all kinds of stuff out of my closet that has no fancy label and that I probably payed 10 bucks for six years ago in some random obscure place that I will never find again.  Then I mix in a few newer items that still have that vintage-ish feel.

Which brings me right back to the dress..

I know I pretty much said it already but I ADORE this dress.. Jason the photog and I went to dinner right after this shoot and I kid you not I got so many compliments... most of them asking where I got it.. From both the boys and the girls.

So here goes.. If you dig it like they do..

Bottom of the first page under dresses.

Note: The tube dress underneath does not come with..get it at American Apparel.. Link above under "Today's Look".. Well worth it..I wear it all the time!

Have A Fabulous Memorial day weekend everyone!!

Carmela Ice Cream..seriously should be illegal!!

It was a rainy day back in February when I ventured to Pasadena to shoot the newly opened Carmela Artisan Creamery.  Not to be confused with a scoop shop which they hope to open soon.  Meaning they manufacture all the yumminess in the back of the shop and have a small retail counter in the front.

I had already been a huge fan of Carmela Ice Cream for a while being that almost every Sunday during the previous summer the Carmela booth would be my first stop at the Hollywood Farmers Market.    Yes Ice Cream for breakfast people!  A little cup of Salted Caramel accompanied by copious tiny tastings of almost every other flavor.  So you can imagine my angst for the last few months of winter as I sat on this gem of a blog post!

Quick run down of the flavors before we move on:

Salted Caramel
Brown Sugar Vanilla Bean
Dark Chocolate Cacao Nib
Strawberry Buttermilk
Lavender Honey
Mint Cacao Nib
Lemon Basil Sorbet
Spiced Strawberry Sorbet
Cucumber Sorbet

Are you drooling yet??

Well there is more..

Carmela Ice Cream sandwiches are made with cookies baked at the creamery from scratch and garnished with sea salt:

Here comes another flavor rundown:

Brown Sugar Vanilla Bean ice cream, Chocolate Chip cookie.
Salted Caramel ice cream, Dark Chocolate cookie.
Fresh Mint w/ Cacao Nibs ice cream, Dark Chocolate cookie.
Strawberry Buttermilk ice cream, Brown Sugar cookie.

Dear lord I may stop typing and take a trip to Pasadena right now!  Pause while I gather myself..

Okay I'm back..

Now to some basics...The where.  The when.  The where.

The Artisan Creamery:
Location: Pasadena
When: 7 days a week.  Sunday -Thursday 12pm- 9pm.  Friday and Saturday 12pm-10pm

The Hollywood Farmers Market:
Location: Selma and Ivar.
When: Sunday 8am-1pm

The Pasadena Farmers Market:
Location: The corner of El Centro Street and Meridian Ave.
When: Thursday's 4pm-8pm

Oh I am not done yet..

Not only do they make the most amazing ice cream.. But they have a vintage 1975 Step Van Ice Cream Truck along with a vintage ice cream cart that will come to you and cater your event with pure tastiness..

Not to Shabby!

Wellness Tonics

So every week almost every week I head to whole foods for some basics.

Greek Yogurt • Raw Granola • Almond Cheese
Gluten Free Crackers • Cookies • Wellness Tonic's.

I've sort of replaced my Kombutcha addiction with these oh so good "fa ya" and "ta ya" drinks.  I have a super sensitive body and I have to make sure that I keep it well "oiled" both inside and out.   I am a person who absolutely has to partake in something that cleanses me from the inside out at least once a day or my body will literally scream at me.

Anyhow... a few months back BHS (Before Hip Surgery) I was at a short film festival and a young man approaches me and says "you used design dope shirts"  WHOA!!!..completely caught off guard.. I had to regroup because that was like a million years ago (whole other story..yes I in fact had two different Tee-shirt lines at two different times that were in the hottest boutiques in LA, SF and NYC).

So once I regrouped and pulled my jaw off the floor because someone actually remembered my stuff,  I asked him what he did..
CONVERSATION:
TAYE
What do you do?

YOUNG MAN
Wellness Tonics.

TAYE
Wellness Wellness Tonics?

YOUNG MAN
Yes.

TAYE
Like the ones I buy every week at Whole Foods?

YOUNG MAN
Yep.

And right then and there I knew it was fate.  I had to blog..
Cut to months later..
Here we are.  If you don't know them already..allow me to introduce you..

Wellness Tonics...Meet my readers...Readers...Meet Wellness Tonics.

Four different tonics.. Four different functions all leading to the same goal..
Purify • Revive • Alkalize • Invigorate.

I took that last bit straight from the pamphlet.. I could not have said it any better.

FASHION FRIDAY.. Blocks of Color ♥ Red Lips

FASHION FRIDAY

 Today's Look
Blazer: H&M
Jeans: H&M  &Now (Limited edition)
Tank: Ogle
Wedges: Micheal Kors
Ring: Club Monaco
Earrings: Vintage Chanel
Bracelet: H&M
Bag: Stella McCartney
Compact: Les Tai Tai

This is one of those FASHION FRIDAYS  where day turned into night mid shoot..  in a park full of elderly eastern Europeans playing chess on the park benches..so the sight of two semi youngsters with camera and flash was very exciting :)..  Needless to say we had an audience.. kinda fun.

This is my version of Color Blocking..I am counting the red lips as a color in this attempt to color block.. when one thinks of color blocking pastels are usually not really part of the equation..  But I make my own rules!!

THE BLAZER
Pretty much my summer staple.. It works with everything..and I wear it with everything!!  I have two other very similar versions that I wear a whole lot too.

THE JEANS
Saw them at H&M.. super cute and very retro..  Love the high waist and the slight conservative nature of them.. They kinda make me feel like a 1970's mom when I wear them.. I know strange..but I had to share that.

THE EARRINGS
Vintage Chanel clip-ons..they hurt like hell!!..but what can you do.  I just wear them in two hours segments.  Two hours on..one hour off..two hours on ..one hour off.. you get it..

THE LIPS
One of the best purchases I have ever made.. The perfect bright matte red!!

THE NAILS
The tone of this Nars Gold is just dreamy.. nice and subtle...

THE BRACELET
Who can resist a pink heart!!

THE RING
If you are a FASHION FRIDAY regular you know that I wear this ring ALL THE TIME!  ..nuff said.

THE BAG
Stella from a couple seasons ago..still one of my faves!  I can put so much unnecessary but oh so necessary stuff in it..ladies you know exactly what I mean.

THE COMPACT
It was a one year Stuff She Likes anniversary gift.. It's a company called Les Tai Tai..  Click here for the one I have..  Super awesome because there are lights built in!!

Alright Beautiful people!!  Have a stellar weekend!!

Don't forget to vote for me for Best Food Blog for the Black Weblog Awards..it would be so awesome to actually win :)  VOTE HERE

Denim Heaven!! Rufcut Jean Shack..

Picture this.. I'm sure we have all done it...You are driving along in traffic..completely late for where ever you are headed..You seem to hit every light..totally anxious.. then you see it!!

In this case it was Rufcut Jean Repair Shack..  Literally a little shack in a parking lot on Pico Blvd.  For a second I thought maybe it was a mirage. I have seriously been stuck in a Levis cut-off drought forever!  For some reason every time I go to get them they are either sold out or wayyyyyy to expensive. I REFUSE to pay $80 for a pair of worn in cut off jean shorts!!

Anyhow, as I usually do, I got completely sidetracked.  "What appointment???"  I knew that if I did not turn into that parking lot at that very second months of hot beautiful days without Levis cut-offs would drift by before I got back there.

So  I turned..  I entered.. and OMG!! I was in Denim heaven.

Greeted by:

1. Cat Stevens "Wild World" blaring from the record player

2. Robert the owner who affectionately calls his place "The Love Shack"

The place is covered in Denim!  Lots O Denim!!

Denim jeans, denim jackets, denim shorts, denim skirts, denim overalls, denim bags,  even a denim lined wall with hundreds of super cool patches.. you seriously feel like you have been transported back to the seventies..

Long story even longer.. after trying on endless pairs of amazing perfectly worn in and shredded cut-offs  hand picked by Robert himself.. (talk about customer service!) I found my perfect pair.. You may recognized them from a previous  FASHION FRIDAY here .. I also snagged a few other items..super cute leather cuff, made by Robert the owner and a vintage Joe Cool tee.  I would have snagged this Ah-Mazing studded denim cross body bag but my wallet was screaming at me..

I will get that bag..some way some how!  When a girl has her eye on something...watch out world!

Did I mention that they also repair your denim.. or get this..turn your wides into skinnies and your skinnies into wides..  Not bad!!! and when you buy a pair either Robert or his super cute protege will adjust them to fit you perfectly.

Okay here is the sad news..

The Rufcut Jean Shack is slated to be torn down at the end of the year to make room for ..you ready for this...A TRAIN!! Ugggggg!!!  The shack has been in business for 40 years and Robert has owned it for the last 15 years.  There has to be a way to actually move this vintage L.A. staple to another location..and I mean actually put the building on a truck and move it!!  Any Takers???

So run..run and run.. to the shack..because it may not be there much longer.
